That has to be one of the least useful features of a forum ever. It is also a huge spam target. Getting rid of a Members list is a good thing.

Message above is prime example of how not to ask questions you want replied to. Misago is OS project developed in free time and so I have no reason to spend that time arguing or dealing with attacks.

I have a different opinion on this subject, everywhere (all I know) forums is a list of registered people. You want to hate myself okay, no problem click a button below my first post, I got this, you have a different opinion - an option in the admin should be I think.

Unlike Misago other forums have heritage they have to support. They cannot simply switch from 2004's way of doing things to current way of doing things and throw out the window all their bloat because their users will rage.
This feedback is at best destructive one. Software is created to solve problems. Every feature in Misago is there because I think it solves certain problem. If you are missing something in Misago, its always better to say what you are trying to accomplish than what you think would do it.
I don't see your use case that list of all registered members is must have on forum because people need way to discover each other is as legit one. As I have mentioned in thread explaining design decisions as well as Misago's Tao, Misago is not about users, its about things they post. User should be discovered trough their posts, not entries on users list. In fact my observations show this is only mechanism that works on internet forums.
Other use cases you've proposed don't buy me either. I don't believe anyone will be spending hours searching 15+ pages long users list to check if he has already joined community: its far more effective to search your inbox for welcome letter or try to sign in with your e-mail address.
If you know user's name but you don't have profile link, you can always search for his name using search function located at users list. It even supports fuzzy comparison, so you don't have to be exact about name you are looking for.
And finally if you think your friends may be registered on forum, don't you think its faster to ask them over social network or IM instead of searching forum's user base?
So sorry, but I don't think we'll ever see "everybody's registered" user list in forum's frontend as part of core package, I don't find use cases that validate inclusion of such feature.
However as current user lists support pagination with some effort into configuration of user ranking system you should be able to get close to what you are after.
